To Tan or Not to Tan

We are embarking on the time of year where tanning is of importance to many people. Having the pale skin is no longer in fashion, so tanning is and has been the latest thing for the last 2 decades now. Many people have their preference when it comes to either using the tanning bed or using spray tans when going to their local Spa and Salon. Both have their pros and cons, so the choice has to be made after much careful consideration and a few test trials. Let’s focus on the tanning bed.

Unless you own your own tanning bed, you most likely have to go to your Salon and Spa to get this process done. If this is the case, make sure you speak to the person who will be setting your “bed” up about which settings and proper time of exposure works best for your skin type. Do your research in advance and protect yourself. One of the most basic but most effective ways to protect yourself is to wear protective goggles or sunglasses.

Here are a few things to be aware of when using tanning beds:

  1. They emit UV radiation very similar to that of outdoor sunlight, so long exposure times are not recommended.
  2. It is possible to effectively tan without “burning” your skin.
  3. Make sure any medications you are taking will not make you more sensitive to the UV rays.
  4. Make sure your chosen Spa and Salon follows proper sanitizing and cleaning procedures.
  5. If you choose to wear clothing, understand tan lines will be present.
  6. Tanning beds are not a safer form than outdoor tanning in the sun, both emit UV rays and are harmful when overexposed.
  7. Some risks can be skin cancer, skin burns, premature skin aging, dry skin, wrinkling, sagging, blistering, and other allergic reactions.
