Skin Infections and a Backflow Preventer

Can you imagine one of your clients returning to your salon with a bacterial skin infection due to getting a pedicure at your salon? Unfortunately, this is a common issue in the spa industry and taking the necessary steps to avoid this problem is pertinent and a backflow preventer is definitely one of those preventative measures.   There are 2 bacterial skin infections and a common fungal infection that you can get from a foot bath, Mycobacterium fortuitum, methicillin- resistant Staphylococcus aureau, and athlete’s foot.   Let’s take a closer look at the skin infections.

Mycobacterium fortuitum or M. fortuitum is a bacterial skin infection that consists of large boils on the toe, foot or leg.  These boils can also be surrounded by smaller bumps.  This bacterial skin infection is caused by shaving after you get pedicure in a foot bath.  Sometimes this infection can heal without treatment and other times it can become an open sore.  If it does get to the stage of an open sore, you will need to seek medical attention for the sore to be lanced and a prescription for a highly potent antibiotic to fight the bacterial skin infection.

Methicilin- resistant Staphylococcus aureau better known as MRSA is an antibiotic resistant bacterial skin infection.  It causes large sores or boils that can appear on any region of your body and is extremely contagious by contact.  Due to the fact that MRSA is resistant to most antibiotics it is very difficult to cure.  MRSA can cause scarring, amputation and even death.

Athlete’s foot is the least you have to worry about of the 3 skin infections it is a fungal infection that usually starts between the toes and can be recognized by its cracked, scaly and red appearance; it also causes itching, burning and pain.  Unlike the other 2 bacterial skin infections that require licensed medical attention, athlete’s foot can be cured at home by using a fungal cream of soaking your feet in bleach water for 10 minutes every night until the fungus clears up.

Now here is the good news, a backflow preventer can help minimize these skin infections. A backflow preventer stops the waste water from mixing with the fresh water that you run into the foot bath.  When you purchase a pedicure chair from you can request that a backflow preventer is installed, that way you do not have to pay for the labor costs of your plumber installing one for you.  Of course, you will still have to perform regular cleanings in between clients as well.  Purchase your pedicure chair with an installed backflow preventer today.
